FOR/ABOUT NEW ORLEANS

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina hundreds of adults and young people descended on New Orleans to begin reconstruction efforts. Some were here with contract companies to provide essential construction support while others had more altruistic endeavors—many as volunteers—to be a part of a seemingly unprecedented task: The rebuilding of an American city. Some were part of church groups from around the country while others simply were high school students looking to fill free time and to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Then an amazing thing happened: Many of these young people finished high school but never forgot their experiences in the Crescent City, and consequently, when it was time for college they enrolled in the numerous universities here. Then after college, they remained—starting companies and infusing into the city a sense of invigoration, youth, hope, and ideas. The list below is just a few of these groups, and this linked article is from the January 21, 2012 edition of The Times-Picayune.
